Slow response

Response time is how long the server takes to send the first part of a page. By default, Snaglist flags pages that take longer than one second.

Why it matters

A slow server delays everything after it, so the page appears later for every visitor. Google also crawls fewer pages when the server is slow.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist measures the response time of every indexable page during the crawl and lists the pages above the threshold, in milliseconds. One slow page can be chance, many slow pages point to the server.

Common causes

  • No page cache, so every page is built from scratch
  • Heavy plugins or database queries
  • A cheap or overloaded hosting package
  • A server far away from the visitors

How to fix it

  1. Turn on page caching.
  2. Find the slowest plugins or queries and replace or remove them.
  3. Compare with a crawl at a quiet moment to rule out traffic peaks.
  4. Consider faster hosting if the whole site stays slow.
