Image without alt attribute

The alt attribute describes an image in words. This image has no alt attribute at all, so screen readers often read out the file name instead.

Why it matters

Blind and partially sighted visitors miss what the image shows. Google uses alt text to understand images and show them in Google Images.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist checks every image in the HTML of your pages and lists the ones without an alt attribute, with the page they are on.

Common causes

  • Images added without filling in the alt field
  • A theme or slider that outputs images without alt
  • Images placed with custom HTML

How to fix it

  1. Describe what the image shows and why it is there, in one short sentence.
  2. For purely decorative images, add an empty alt so screen readers skip them.
  3. Fill in alt text in the media library so it is reused.
