Language attribute doesn't match the URL

The lang attribute in the HTML says which language a page is in. On this page it does not match the language in the address, for example lang="nl" on a page under /en/.

Why it matters

Screen readers pronounce the text in the wrong language, browsers offer the wrong translation, and search engines get a mixed signal about who the page is for.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist compares the lang attribute of every indexable page with the language code at the start of its address and lists the pages where they differ.

Common causes

  • A multilingual plugin that sets one language for the whole site
  • A theme with a fixed language in the template
  • Pages copied from another language

How to fix it

  1. Set the lang attribute per language in the template or the language plugin.
  2. Check that the hreflang tags match the same languages.

Find this on your own site.
