Warning

External link to an error

A broken external link is a link from your site to another site that no longer works. The page you refer to is gone or the site is offline.

Why it matters

Visitors who follow the link get an error and lose some trust in your page. For Google, a page full of dead references looks neglected.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist checks every outgoing link once. Links that return 400 or higher, or no answer, are listed with the page they are on. Codes that sites use to block automated visitors (401, 403, 405, 429 and 999, used by LinkedIn) are left out, because the link usually works for a person.

Common causes

  • The other site moved or removed the page
  • The other site no longer exists
  • A typo in the link
  • A link to a temporary page, such as an event or campaign

How to fix it

  1. Open the link yourself to confirm it is really gone.
  2. Look for the new address of the same content on that site.
  3. Replace the link, link to an archived version, or remove it.

Find this on your own site.
