Error

Internal link to an error

A broken internal link is a link on your own site to a page of your own site that returns an error. The visitor clicks and ends up nowhere.

Why it matters

Internal links tell Google which pages matter and carry visitors through the site. A broken one wastes both, and a broken link in a menu or footer repeats on every page.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist bundles all links per destination. If a destination answers with 400 or higher, or does not answer at all, it is listed once with one of the pages that link to it and the number of pages with that link.

Common causes

  • The target page was deleted or renamed
  • A link was typed by hand with a mistake
  • A link in a template, menu or footer that was never updated
  • Links that point to a staging or old domain

How to fix it

  1. Open the export with all inlinks to see every page with the broken link.
  2. Change the link to the correct, working address.
  3. If the link sits in a menu, footer or template, fix it once there.
  4. If the target should exist, restore it or add a 301 to its replacement.
