Temporary redirect (302/307)

A temporary redirect (302 or 307) tells browsers and Google that a page has moved for now and will come back. When the move is permanent, a 301 or 308 is the right signal.

Why it matters

With a temporary redirect, Google may keep the old address in its index and pass less value to the new one. That slows down a move and can leave the wrong address in the search results.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist lists every page that answers with 302 or 307, together with the address it redirects to.

Common causes

  • A redirect plugin set to 302 by default
  • A language or login redirect that uses 302
  • A temporary redirect for maintenance or a campaign that stayed

How to fix it

  1. Decide whether the move is permanent.
  2. If so, change the redirect to 301.
  3. If it really is temporary, for example during maintenance, leave it and remove it afterwards.
