Internal link to a redirect

This is a link on your own site that points to an address that redirects. The visitor still arrives, but takes a detour on every click.

Why it matters

Each detour adds a little loading time and a request for Google. On a large site with many such links, Google spends crawl time on redirects instead of content.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist bundles internal links per destination. Every destination that answers with a 3xx code is listed once, with one of the pages that link to it and the number of pages with that link.

Common causes

  • Links that were not updated after a page moved
  • Links without the trailing slash or with http instead of https
  • Menu items that point to an old address

How to fix it

  1. Look up the final address of the redirect.
  2. Change the internal links to that final address.
  3. Fix links in menus, footers and templates once, at the source.

Find this on your own site.
