Almost the brand colour

The stylesheets use a colour that is almost a brand colour, but not quite.

Why it matters

Other colours are not a mistake, every site has greys and a link colour. The mistake is the colour that was meant to be the brand colour. On its own nobody sees it, side by side you do: one agency found three different blacks on its own site.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist reads the stylesheets of the site and the style blocks in the pages and collects every colour. For each colour it calculates the difference with the nearest brand colour, the way a printer does (CIEDE2000). Below 1 it is the same colour. Between 1 and 5 it is a brand colour that was copied wrongly. Without brand colours on the site page, Snaglist takes the most used vivid colours as the brand and looks for near copies of those.

Common causes

  • A colour picked by eye from a screenshot
  • An old export with a slightly different colour profile
  • A plugin or page builder with its own version of the colour
  • Loose hex codes instead of one variable in the theme

How to fix it

  1. Fill in the brand colours on the site page.
  2. Replace each colour in the list with the brand colour from the detail.
  3. Put the brand colours in one variable in the theme and use only that.
  4. Add deliberate shades, such as a hover colour, to the brand colours.
