Canonical points to another URL

This page has a canonical tag that points to another address. You are telling Google that the other page is the original and this one should not be indexed.

Why it matters

That is right for copies and variants. On a page you want to be found, it is a mistake that keeps it out of the search results.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist reads the canonical tag of every page and lists the pages whose canonical points to a different address, with that address.

Common causes

  • Product variants or filter pages that point to the main page, as intended
  • A template that sets the homepage as canonical on every page
  • A copied page that kept the canonical of the original

How to fix it

  1. Check for each listed page whether it should be indexed.
  2. If so, let the canonical point to the page itself.
  3. If it is a copy on purpose, nothing needs to change.
