Duplicate meta description

A duplicate meta description means several pages share exactly the same description. In the search results they all promise the same thing.

Why it matters

Searchers cannot see which page fits their question, and Google is more likely to ignore the description and write its own.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist compares the descriptions of all indexable pages, without regard to capitals, and lists every page whose description also appears elsewhere.

Common causes

  • A default description set for the whole site
  • Copied pages where the description was not changed
  • Product variants with the same text

How to fix it

  1. Write a description per page that matches its content.
  2. Remove the site-wide default, so a missing description shows up as missing instead of duplicate.
  3. Merge pages that are really the same.

Find this on your own site.
