Meta description too long

A meta description that is too long is cut off in the search results. By default, Snaglist flags descriptions longer than 155 characters.

Why it matters

What falls off is not read, and Google is more likely to replace a long description with its own choice of text.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist counts the characters of the description on every indexable page and lists the ones above the threshold, with the text and its length.

Common causes

  • A full paragraph pasted as description
  • Several sentences of selling points
  • A description generated from the start of the page

How to fix it

  1. Put the most important message in the first 120 characters.
  2. Cut the rest down to one clear promise.
  3. Keep the description roughly between 70 and 155 characters.
