Duplicate title

A duplicate title means several pages share exactly the same title tag. Google and visitors cannot tell them apart in the search results.

Why it matters

Pages with the same title compete with each other, and Google may pick the wrong one to show. It is often a sign that the titles come from a template instead of from the page.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist compares the titles of all indexable pages, without regard to capitals. Every page whose title also appears on another page is listed, with the number of pages that share it.

Common causes

  • A template that uses the site name as title on every page
  • Pagination or filter pages that copy the title of the first page
  • Product variants that each get the same title

How to fix it

  1. Give every page a title that describes that page.
  2. For pagination, add the page number to the title.
  3. If pages are really the same, choose one and point the others to it with a canonical or a 301.
