Duplicate H1

A duplicate H1 means several pages use exactly the same main heading. Visitors and search engines then see pages that look alike from the top.

Why it matters

Pages with the same heading compete for the same subject. It often means the heading comes from a template instead of from the page.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist compares the first H1 of all indexable pages, without regard to capitals, and lists every page whose H1 also appears on another page.

Common causes

  • A template that shows the site name as H1
  • Location or service pages built from one copy
  • Archive and pagination pages with the same heading

How to fix it

  1. Give each page a heading that matches its own subject.
  2. For location pages, put the place name in the heading.
  3. Merge pages that are really about the same thing.
