Duplicate page

A duplicate page has exactly the same text as another page on the site, under a different address. Google then has to guess which one to show.

Why it matters

Duplicates split links and attention between two addresses. Google usually indexes one of them, and not always the one you want.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist makes a fingerprint of the readable text of every indexable page. Pages with the same fingerprint are listed together, with the other address and the number of copies.

Common causes

  • The same page reachable with and without a trailing slash or parameter
  • Print or tag versions of the same content
  • Copied pages that were never adjusted
  • Test pages that were published

How to fix it

  1. Choose the address that should remain.
  2. Add a 301 redirect from the copies, or a canonical to the chosen address.
  3. Remove copies that serve no purpose.
  4. Link internally only to the chosen address.
