WarningWith Search Console

Google picks a different canonical

You set a canonical for this page, but Google chose a different address as the original. Google overrides your choice.

Why it matters

Google then shows the other address in the search results and gives it the value. That is often a sign of duplicate content or mixed signals.

How Snaglist checks it

With Search Console connected, Snaglist compares the canonical Google chose with the canonical the page has now, for pages that answer with 200. Differences are listed with both addresses.

Common causes

  • Two pages with almost the same content
  • Internal links that point to the other version
  • A sitemap that lists the other version
  • Mixed http and https, or www and non-www

How to fix it

  1. Decide which version should be the original.
  2. Make all signals point there: canonical, internal links and sitemap.
  3. Redirect or differentiate the other version.

Find this on your own site.
