Mobile menu stays open

After tapping a link in the mobile menu the new page loads, but the menu stays open on top of it.

Why it matters

The visitor taps a link and still sees the menu. They have to close it first, and many think the link did not work.

How Snaglist checks it

With the menu open Snaglist taps a link in it to another page of the site and waits for the address to change. When most menu links are still in view afterwards, or the button still says aria-expanded="true", it reports this.

Common causes

  • A site that changes pages without reloading, such as Next.js, Nuxt or another single page app
  • Menu state that does not listen to the route
  • A transition that keeps the old menu on screen

How to fix it

  1. Close the menu as soon as the address changes, for example by watching the route in the menu component.
  2. Or close it on every tap on a link in the menu.
  3. Check the page again after the next crawl.
