Warning

No menu button on mobile

On a wide screen the menu is in view. On a phone it disappears, and there is no button to open it.

Why it matters

Visitors on a phone cannot reach the other pages. Google judges the mobile version of a site, so pages that only the desktop menu links to are harder to find.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist counts the links in the header and the nav at phone width and on a wide screen. When at least three are in view on the wide screen, fewer than two on the phone, and no menu button is found, it reports this. A page without any menu, like a simple landing page, is not reported.

Common causes

  • A theme that hides the menu on small screens without showing a button
  • A menu button made of a div or image without a name, which Snaglist does not recognise
  • A page builder setting that hides the mobile header

How to fix it

  1. Put a real button in the header with aria-label="Menu" and aria-expanded.
  2. Let it open the same menu as on the wide screen.
  3. Check the page again after the next crawl.
