Near-duplicate page

A near-duplicate page has text that is largely the same as another page. By default, Snaglist flags pairs that are 90 percent or more alike.

Why it matters

Google is less likely to index pages that add little to a page it already knows. With many near-duplicates, part of the site may stay out of the index.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist compares a fingerprint of the text of every indexable page with all others, in groups of three words. Pairs above the threshold are listed with the other page and the percentage of overlap.

Common causes

  • Location or service pages with only the place name changed
  • Product variants with the same description
  • Pages with little own text inside a large shared template

How to fix it

  1. Give each page its own content: examples, prices, questions or cases that apply only there.
  2. Merge pages that really serve the same purpose.
  3. Use a canonical for variants that should not rank on their own.
