Warning

Page wider than the screen

At phone width the homepage is wider than the screen, so the page slides sideways.

Why it matters

Visitors see an empty edge or cut-off text and the page wobbles under their thumb. Google judges the mobile version of a site.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist opens the homepage in a phone browser (iPhone 13, 390 pixels wide) and compares the width of the page with the width of the screen.

Common causes

  • An image, video or embed with a fixed width
  • A table that does not fit
  • A block with a negative margin or a width of 100vw plus padding
  • A long word or address that does not break

How to fix it

  1. Find the block that sticks out, for example with the developer tools of the browser at phone width.
  2. Give it max-width: 100%, or set overflow-x: clip on the section.
  3. Check the page again after the next crawl.

Find this on your own site.
