Error

Your domain address gives an error

An address of your domain gives a certificate error, an error page or no answer. A visitor who types it, or follows an old link, gets a warning instead of your site.

Why it matters

People type your address in their own way, and old links and business cards keep working for years. A certificate error on the name without www looks like a hacked site, and most visitors leave at once. You rarely see it yourself, because your browser remembers the address that works.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist visits your domain with and without www, over https and http, and follows every redirect. It checks the certificate, the status and where the address ends up. An address that is not in the DNS is listed too.

Snaglist reports this as an error. In the health score an error costs the whole page, so fix it first.

Common causes

  • The certificate only covers the name with www, or only the name without it
  • The hosting was moved and only one of the names came along
  • The name without www is missing from the DNS

How to fix it

  1. Open the address from the list in a private browser window.
  2. Request a certificate that covers both names.
  3. Redirect the address with a 301 to your main address.
  4. Crawl again to confirm that every address works.

How it shows in the report

In the report for your client this appears under the heading "Addresses of your domain that do not work". When everything is in order, the report says: "Every address of your domain works".
