Text differs from your tone of voice

A sentence on the site does not fit a rule on tone or writing style in your own brand manual.

Why it matters

A tone of voice only works if it is on every page, also on the pages somebody wrote in a hurry. Nobody rereads a whole site for that. The standard here is your own manual, never a general opinion from Snaglist on what good copy is.

How Snaglist checks it

This check only runs with a brand manual you uploaded and tone rules you confirmed. Without a manual there is no result, and Snaglist asks you to upload one. Snaglist takes the text of up to six pages, a sample of the page types, and an AI model (Mistral, through its EU address) lays it next to your rules. It may only name a sentence that clearly breaks a numbered rule. Snaglist then checks that the sentence is literally on the page and that the rule exists. Everything else is dropped. Because a model makes this judgement, read it as a pointer: you decide. This check does not cost a crawl any pages.

Snaglist reports this as a notification. It costs 2 percent of the page in the health score. Good to know, and sometimes a deliberate choice.

Common causes

  • Copy written before the manual existed
  • A page written by somebody who did not know the rules
  • Text pasted from an old brochure or from a supplier
  • A rule in the manual that does not suit this kind of page

How to fix it

  1. Read the sentence next to the rule in the detail.
  2. Rewrite it if you agree.
  3. If the rule does not suit the site, switch it off on the site page.

How it shows in the report

In the report for your client this appears under the heading "Sentences that do not fit your tone of voice". When everything is in order, the report says: "The copy fits the tone of voice in the manual".
