Spelling mistake in the text

A word in a sentence on your site is not in the dictionary of the page's language and is one letter away from a word that is.

Why it matters

A typo on a sales page stands out and costs trust, even if the rest of the page is good. Visitors do not know that a text was written in a hurry. They only see that nobody read it again.

How Snaglist checks it

Snaglist reads the running text of every page, in the language of that page: Dutch, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian or Polish. It checks every word against open dictionaries on its own server in Europe. It skips anything that looks like a name, your brand name, words in capitals, addresses, sentences in another language, compounds of two existing words and words that come back in several sentences on your site. The few sentences left go to Mistral, a French AI service on its European address, for a second reading: without the address of the page, and only to decide whether the word is a real mistake. It would rather report too little than too much, so a clean list does not prove that a text has no mistakes. It also does not check grammar.

Snaglist reports this as a notification. It costs 2 percent of the page in the health score. Good to know, and sometimes a deliberate choice.

Common causes

  • A typo that nobody read again
  • A text pasted in a hurry from a mail or a word processor
  • A translation that was never checked
  • A trade term or name that is not in any dictionary: then it is not a mistake

How to fix it

  1. Read the sentence in the list. The word in question is marked.
  2. Open the page in your editor and correct the word if it is a mistake.
  3. Leave it as it is if it is a name or trade term you write this way on purpose.
  4. A number behind the sentence, such as (+3), means the same sentence is on that many other pages. Correct it in the template or on each of those pages.

How it shows in the report

In the report for your client this appears under the heading "Spelling mistakes in your texts". When everything is in order, the report says: "No spelling mistakes found in your texts".
